Opening of the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts Brussels the 23rd. of September 2011.
The museum of letters and manuscripts is in the centre of Brussels, not far from The Grande Place, is situated at number three The Galeries Royales, 1000 Brussels.
Gérard Lhéritier is the président of the museum. This private museum preserves and displays the work of some of the greatest men and women of art, history, literature and science.
This museum is a window on the world and is in a spirit of sharing opens its doors and collections to researchers, the general public, and enthusiasts of all ages.

The museum has around 80.000 letters, manuscripts, autographs, and drawings that have been presented to a the museum both in Paris and in Brussels. Both museums have permanent collections and mount temporary exhibitions . This wealth of unique material is allied to the requirement to conserve of inherently fragile items.
Regular loans to other museums and institutions allow a high turnover of the exhibits. The space of the permanent collection is organized into five departments: literature, arts, history, music and science. The pieces are presented according to a distribution: partly chronological and partly thematic.
The MLM (Museum of Letters and Manuscripts) Brussels are presenting a major exhibition of the unpublished manuscripts by Georges Simenon: futures exibitions. It is likely that this exhibition will reveal to you many surprises.
To celebrate the opening to the public, the museum propose an exhibition concentrates on the Belgian writer Georges Simenon, creator of the famous Inspector Maigret, the prolific author of 192 novels, 75 "Maigret" and 12 Reports of new twentieth century ..
We learn that Simenon wrote a detective novel in less than 8 days. Writing his novels at speed gave Simenon ten days of leisure time to appreciate good wine, and then following on from this three days for making any necessary corrections. The visitors will discover the famous yellow envelopes on which the author wrote down the names of people, places, and sketches as an aide memoire ..
The Museum also includes letters and drawings by René Magritte, James Ensor, Maeterlinck, Hugo Claus ... Letters from Victor Hugo’s exile and Baudelaire recalling that Brussels has long been a kind land of refuge for the proscribed individal. There is also correspondence written in an admirable French by the Russian writer Tolstoy and the German poet Goethe.

D'HUGO A COBRA, Bruxelles s'affiche rebelle....

A travers le parcours chornologique de l'exposition, qui commence avec les exilés célèbres du XIXe siècle et se termine à l'orée des années 1950-1960, on a souhaité mettre l'accent sur le côté rebelle, voire carrément révolutionnaire de Bruxelles culturel de ces époques. Lorsque Victor Hugo arrive dans la capitale en 1852, il y rédige Napoléon le petit, son fameux pamphlet contre le retour de Napoléon III.
Un peu plus tard, et dans un tout autre contexte, le Groupe des Vingts, va lui aussi privilégier l'avant -garde, à rebours de l'académie qui règnait dans les grands salons de l'époque. On retrouve donc cette idée de contestation d'un ordre étable, qu'il soit politique ou culturel.
Un fil rouge nous conduit jusqu'au mouvement surréaliste et Cobra, présente dans l'exposition. En effet, ces mouvements eux aussi sont des insurrections contre un certain académisme. L'exposition montre que Bruxelles a toujours été un grand foyer contestataire et d'avant garde, avec cette mentalité extrêmement ouverte sur les mouvements novateurs. Cela crée par exemple un terreau propice à l'éclosion du Groupe des Vingts, emmené par Octave Maus à partir de 1883, mais aussi du surréalisme et du mouvement COBRA.
